A recent study published in Nature Medicine reveals that Ozempic and Mounjaro, known primarily for managing type 2 diabetes and aiding weight loss, also offer substantial cardiovascular protection. Conducted by researchers from the Technical University of Munich and Harvard Medical School, the research analyzed real-world data from thousands of diabetes patients, finding that Ozempic (semaglutide) lowered the combined risk of stroke and heart attack by approximately 18% compared to sitagliptin, a non-cardioprotective diabetes medication. Mounjaro (tirzepatide) showed a 13% reduction in a broader measure involving heart attack, stroke, and death against dulaglutide, another GLP-1 medication. The findings suggest that these drugs offer heart protective effects that are independent of weight loss, emphasizing their potential role in transforming diabetes care while addressing the increased cardiovascular risk associated with type 2 diabetes. Experts affirm that this evidence could make GLP-1 medications critical in preventing cardiovascular diseases, which represent a major health concern globally.
